MARKET HIGHS AND LOWS
The ASPARAGUS market is expected to rise in the coming weeks. Product has been so inexpensive that many growers stopped harvesting it. Now, supplies are beginning to thin out a bit, plus,
California
product is starting to go to seed. AVOCADOES are also on the rise. Mexican offerings are full of oil and almost finished placing a large burden on
California
product. Look for a few days of disruption in the ROMAINE and LETTUCE market. Crops are gapping as shipments switch to the
Salinas
growing area. On the other hand, now that
California
is in full swing,
CHILE
prices are expected to fall and remain low.
NEW ITEM
We have received PISENLIT, a new item belonging to the Cichorium Family of vegetables. These vegetables all have in common a slightly fitter taste and can be used for multiple purposes, including in salads, braised as a vegetable or for decoration. They are very versatile and very delicious. Our current stable of Cichorium vegetables includes BELGIAN and REGULAR ENDIVE, RADICCHIO, FRISEE,
TREVISO
and ENDIGIA.
CORN
All colors of CORN are doing very well and dropping in price. Look for this trend to continue right through the Memorial Day weekend. Most production is currently out of the
Coachella
Valley
.
SQUASH UPDATE
Look for most soft-shelled squash to slowly come down in price. Look for GOLD BAR to be in full flush, however, YELLOW CROOKNECK is still a bit firm. As long as the weather stays warm, this market should be in good shape for quite a while. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for hard-shelled squash. This market is beginning to tighten up, especially SPAGHETTI SQUASH, which is very difficult to find.
BERRIES
The weather has been very beneficial to the growing of STRAWBERRIES and even STEMBERRIES. Current offerings are large, sweet, and a nice shade of deep red. Also in supply are BLUEBERRIES, RASPBERRIES and BLACKBERRIES.
IN ADDITION…
Good quality HADEN MANGOS have started to arrive. Look for prices to drop further as production reaches full stride.
As we await the start of BLACK PLUMS, the size and sweetness of RED PLUMS continues to improve.
The first WHITE NECTARINES have arrived. They are packaged in single layer flats and these first shipments are very promising.
